Adventures in Photography

I started my journey in art photography in 2014. It subsequently became a passion and has given me a strong purpose late in life. Each day is a new adventure in pursuit of light.

Living in Margaret River in a remote south-west corner of Australia, we are surrounded by beautiful wooded country and many vineyards; close to the point where the Indian Ocean meets the wild Southern Ocean at Cape Leeuwin.

Being in natural landscapes is healing for the spirit; whether it be by the ocean, up the mountains or deep in the forests. Many of my early images sought to capture essential impressions of these landscapes. The images I have chosen are ones that most effectively recall how it felt to be in these beautiful scenes. They are tangible evidence of what I saw; of what drew powerfully on my attention. My eye is often drawn not so much to the wider view but rather to a fragment or element that tells a more intimate story of what is there.

More recently my work is evolving to capture a distillation of urban landscapes and the way that light plays upon the scene in front of me. Frequently I seek abstraction. I am finding that working in black and white enables me to express more clearly how I see and feel about light and form.

My Mentors

I have been lucky to find some wonderful teachers in my photography journey. They have taught me many skills and techniques, but most importantly they have taught me an appreciation of the art of photography as a rich and rewarding pastime. I have spent time with each of them, and they are great people to know. In particular I owe a debt of gratitude to Nick Melidonis, William Neill and Bruce Percy.

And from Charles Cramer I learned how to produce fine art prints as the ultimate expression of the photograph.

In September 2020 I was delighted to be awarded Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society, following submission of my panel of prints earlier in the year.
